Esperance, (Twilight Bay, Great Ocean Road, Pink Lake), WA

Twilight BayI really loved Esperance although only stayed for a few days I think I could move there, mainly I think because of all the great areas for 4wding and hitting the beaches that are in the vicinity. The town had heaps of shops and restaurants and a really friendly holiday sort of feel, seemed to be a younger age group in general then Mandurah where we live, so a bit more lively, we will be back and stay for a lot longer next time.

We stayed at the Seafront caravan park which was expensive and pretty ordinary, but it was clean. Caught up with family who drove down from Kalgoorlie and they stayed in one of the onsite vans, and it was like at least 40 years old and really smelly and really run down for the $100 a night charge. Might try a different one next time.

Our must dos for this area were visit the Pink Lake, drive the Great Ocean Road and go to Twilight Bay.

The Pink Lake was a total waste of time, it was not pink at all but dirty brown, apparently it only really gets pink in middle of summer when algae is more concentrated. I was not even a pretty lake.

Twilight Bay is definitely worth a visit, this would have to be one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen, the sand is white and clean and the water is crystal clear and that amazing turquoise colour your see round this way. It has these great rock formations that give it heaps of shelter from the wind making it nice and safe for swimming.  We were her on a Sunday and the lifesaving club was out in force doing training on the beach, so a bit of entertainment as well. The water is still quite cold in November, not sure if it even gets any warmer than this at all. But the temperature was perfect for sitting on the beach or up in the mog and just watching the world go by.

Twilight Bay is on the Great Ocean Drive a 38 km ring road along the ocean with views out to the Recherche Archipelago that are absolutely spectacular. The drive is just one beautiful bay after the other with massive headlands separating them, the beaches in these bays have the whites sand I have seen and beautiful turquoise water of the as far as the eye can see dotted with small islands. I would love to drive it a few more times if we had time, without having to worry about taking photos.

This area is already high on my list of places to explore more fully in the future.
